Finding the right childcare in Concord
Concord was named in 1796 to symbolize harmony after German and Scots-Irish settlers compromised on where to locate Cabarrus County's seat. The city sits near the Reed Gold Mine, where Conrad Reed's nearly 20-pound gold nugget discovery in 1799 sparked America's first gold rush and led to the construction of the nation's first gold mine in 1803. Today, Concord is home to Charlotte Motor Speedway, a legendary NASCAR venue that opened in 1959. Concord (pop. 105,572), in the Charlotte metro area, offers families 19 licensed childcare centers ranging from infant care through afterschool programs. We scored each DCDEE-licensed childcare center across 11 real dimensions — safety, curriculum, arts & music, infant care, kindergarten readiness and more. Scores drawn from major public review platforms and parent communities — not center marketing.
Primrose School at Afton Village is a DCDEE five-star licensed private childcare franchise in Concord's Afton Village neighborhood, operated by Mike and Judy Walker since 2005 with capacity for 175 children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The school holds dual accreditation and delivers the nationally recognized Balanced Learning curriculum, earning strong parent praise on Listen360 (113 reviews) for attentive, warm teachers and measurable child development outcomes. Three consecutive annual inspections have flagged correctable operational violations — primarily documentation and medication-handling issues — which families should weigh against the school's otherwise strong quality credentials.

Serves broad age range from infants (6 weeks) through school-age (12 years), with Pre-K and Summer Adventure programs

Considerations
December 2023 inspection cited medication administered without written authorization and insufficient infant sleep monitoring documentation
June 2023 inspection found activity plan not current, leftover medication not returned to parents, and small hazardous items accessible to infants
December 2022 inspection cited unsecured storage of cleaning supplies and corrosive agents
No Google or Yelp ratings publicly indexed — limits external review visibility for prospective families
Apple Maps shows only 5 reviews with a 2.6 average, suggesting a small but mixed public review footprint

Speedway Academy & Preschool is a DCDEE-licensed private childcare center in south-central Concord serving infants through school-age children with a strong emphasis on play-based social and cognitive development. Parents give it top marks for communication and individualized attention, and the center accepts subsidized care — though its 3-star NC license and a handful of 2023 inspection findings suggest room to grow on the compliance side. Located in zip 28025 on Branchview Drive, it fills a practical need for families in this part of Cabarrus County.
Strengths
Very high parent satisfaction with a 4.9-star aggregated rating from 71 reviews
Low child-to-teacher ratio allowing individualized attention
Regular parent communication via the Brightwheel app with daily activity and meal updates
Serves infants through school-age (0-12 years) with broad program range
Accepts subsidized childcare, making it accessible to a wider range of families
Extended hours (6:30 AM - 6:00 PM) accommodate working parents
Considerations
Holds a 3-star NC license rather than the 4- or 5-star ratings seen at some competitors in the area
Multiple inspection violations documented in 2023, including infant feeding plan documentation and medication management issues
Relatively new facility (opened May 2023), with a shorter operating track record
What parents say
“Low child-to-teacher ratio allows for individualized attention and tailored learning experiences. Regular updates via the Brightwheel app keep parents informed about their child's activities, meals, and overall progress throughout the day.”

The Sunshine House of Concord is a large, NC 5-star DCDEE-licensed center at 3056 Weddington Rd NW serving up to 250 children from 6 weeks through 12 years of age. Its all-inclusive tuition model covers meals, Spanish, sign language, and enrichment, and a live camera app gives parents real-time classroom visibility. Recent inspections flagged safety and documentation violations that families should review, and the limited public review base (Yelp 3.5/3) makes a comprehensive parent-sentiment picture difficult to establish.
Strengths
5-star DCDEE rated facility (license #13000265) — highest rating available in NC
Large capacity of 250 children serving infants (6 weeks) through school-age (12 years)
Classroom cameras with live feeds accessible to parents via MySunshineHouse app for real-time updates
Long-tenured director Kimberly Hutchins on staff since 2006, providing leadership continuity
Transportation provided from six local schools; before- and after-school care available
Enrolled in NC subsidized child care program; military benefits accepted
Considerations
State inspection records reportedly noted a 2024 finding related to storage of hazardous materials; families may wish to review the facility's current licensing record for details.
Inspection findings also included playground gate issues, electrical outlet safety, and medication storage lapses
Yelp rating is only 3.5/5 across 3 reviews; Google Maps rating not publicly confirmed
One Yelp reviewer reported filing a state complaint and withdrawing their child
High capacity (250) means a large-facility feel that may not suit families seeking a more intimate environment
Indeed employee reviews note staffing challenges and insufficient onboarding for lead teacher roles
What parents say
“Our son has been at the Sunshine house for almost 2 years. He absolutely loves it and so do we. The teachers are awesome and genuinely care about the kids.”
“My son has been going here since he was 6 months old. He absolutely loves it. All the teachers are fantastic and really love children!”
“If you are looking for a place where you feel like family, the Sunshine House is it.”
“Kids R Kids Concord is an excellent childcare learning center! My son started October 2020, the center has done an excellent job keeping him safe and keeping us informed of any health concerns. I appreciate the owners and staff taking care of my son, and it means a lot to me when the owners know him by name! Thank you Kids r Kids for genuinely caring for our children during these unprecedented times! Highly recommend!”
“Absolutely the best daycare experience for my infant & 4 year old. Pictures and progress reports daily. Hands on learning activities my 4 year old absolutely loved! Learning Spanish & sign language. I'm wishing my schedule hadn't changed. I highly recommend KRK!”
“My son has attended this school for a year and a half now. Kunal and the staffing from day one have been more then caring and understanding. When my son was 6 months he would not take a bottle every school I went to refused to help and I really needed to get back to work. Kids R kids was the only daycare willing to put the effort in and try and even work with me and even allow me to come up there everyday to feed him if he wasn't getting enough milk for the day. Now he is in the 2 year old classes and he could not be happier. My son is totally a momma boy but as soon as he sees that door in the morning he's ready to go. There is no better daycare then Kids R Kids and the staffing and owner are beyond amazing. The school staffing makes you feel like family.”
“I LOVE Concord Children's Academy! My children are learning and exploring every day, but most importantly, they are safe, well cared for and loved.”
“This business discriminated against my children. One of my children broke out in hives due to them, not paying attention to his allergy list in school or just giving him milk to break him out then she kept raising the fee once I signed but never took the money so I was like OK she'll take the money when she finally took the money. It was time for me to pay two months. I guess she thought I couldn't afford it but I could and then here comes my kids getting reports on them no mornings my kids were terminated and i as I stated as a mother of three sweet, loving and harmless children being discriminated against will not be accepted, and I will continue to go to the fullest extent about my children.”
“they quoted us the preschool price for our infant over the phone, so we were blindsided by the actual price. Secondly, the staff seemed unorganized and a bit frazzled. They also only had two caregivers for 10 babies, when they advertise three.”
“The management is absolutely fantastic and always willing to accommodate staff needs.”
“great caring environment with hardworking employees. Teachers provide great care...”
“This is by far the worse daycare experience I've encountered. My daughter received a bruise/black eye and the director would not allow me to view the footage for the protection of the privacy of their kids.”
