Finding the right childcare in Matthews
Matthews earned its name in 1874 when the Central Carolina Railroad (later the Seaboard Air Line) established a depot through town and named the station after Edward Matthews, one of the railroad's directors. Before that, the early settlement had been nicknamed Stumptown for the countless tree stumps left behind from clearing land for cotton fields—a name so enduring that it inspired the modern Stumptown Athletic soccer club founded in the town in 2019. Today, Matthews celebrates its heritage through the annual Matthews Alive festival, which draws more than 150,000 visitors to its four-day regional event. Matthews, a suburb south of Charlotte (pop. 37,133), offers a range of childcare options from infant and toddler programs to Christian-centered classrooms and after-school care. We scored each DCDEE-licensed childcare center across 11 real dimensions — safety, curriculum, arts & music, infant care, kindergarten readiness and more. Scores drawn from major public review platforms and parent communities — not center marketing.
“I can't say enough good things about The Goddard School in Matthews. They are a 5-star school and all the teachers and staff show why every day. It's very well run, the teachers really care about the kids, learning is made fun for the kids with a good balance between work and play. Safety and cleanliness are also top priorities, which helps put this overprotective mom at ease. My son is very happy there too - no complaints about going to his 'work' every day when I go to mine.”
“We absolutely love this school. Between the teachers, staff, and curriculum - so happy we found them!!!!”
“We love our Goddard teachers! My son has grown so much with the love and compassion shown by the school.”
