Alta Head Start Ysu, located on the Youngstown State University campus in Beeghly Hall, serves income-eligible Mahoning County families at no cost, including meals and all health services. The program holds Ohio Step Up To Quality's highest rating (Gold, five-star tier) and operates as a laboratory learning experience for YSU students pursuing careers in early childhood, health, nutrition, and oral health. Lead Teachers hold Bachelor's Degrees in Early Childhood Education, with assistants holding at minimum a CDA. Enhanced on-site services include hearing, vision, and speech/language screenings; oral health care; nursing; mental health and behavioral support; and early intervention services, with a Family Advocate assigned to each family for initial home visits.
