Gnadenhutten was founded in 1772 as Ohio's oldest existing European settlement by Moravian Christians, though it is remembered today for the tragic 1782 massacre when militiamen killed about 90 unarmed Native Americans at the mission settlement. Newcomerstown takes its name from Netawatwees (also known as Newcomer), a Lenape leader who established a village there in the 1760s, and the town became famous as the hometown of baseball legend Cy Young and football coach Woody Hayes. Strasburg, settled in 1828 by German immigrants from the city of Strasbourg, was once home to the Garver Brothers store, which operated from 1903 to 1970 and was known as the country's largest general store before it closed.
