Why it fits Lap Listeners (for babies in their first year, when books are about your voice, not the plot)

An I-spy rhyme that hides nursery characters in every scene. The sing-song verse rewards rereading while the pictures give pre-verbal babies something to hunt. It quietly seeds the nursery-tale characters they'll meet again for years.

What makes it special

The Ahlbergs built a book that teaches looking — every page hides the next character in plain sight. The cozy English-countryside watercolors reward patient scanning in a way no screen ever asks of a baby. It quietly trains sustained visual attention, the exact muscle a swipe-fed world lets atrophy.

From the publisher

Rhymed text and illustrations invite the reader to play "I Spy" with a variety of Mother Goose and other folklore…

About Janet Ahlberg

Janet Ahlberg (1944–1994) illustrated some of Britain's most beloved picture books, all written by her husband Allan — a husband-and-wife team whose gentle, detail-packed collaborations won two Kate Greenaway Medals. Her specialty was warm domestic scenes hiding dozens of things to find.

The Ahlbergs worked at a kitchen-table scale: Allan wrote in one room, Janet drew in another, and books like The Jolly Postman — with real letters in real envelopes — came from their delight in making books children could handle as objects.
